Short Bio:

Alexander Nussbaumer received a master degree (Dipl.-Ing.) in Telematics (Information and Computer Engineering) and a doctoral degree (Dr. techn.) in Computer Science from Graz University of Technology, Austria. After working in industry as software developer (Web-based and virtual reality applications), he joined the Cognitive Science Section of the Department of Psychology at the University of Graz in 2006. Since 2009 he has been member of the Cognitive Science Section of the Institute of Interactive Systems and Data Science (ISDS) at Graz University of Technology, Austria. In the context of these affiliations he has been participating in several EC-funded research projects on digital learning (iClass, GRAPPLE, ROLE, RAGE), medical training (MedCAP), cultural heritage (CULTURA), secure society research (S-HELP, VALCRI), and smart city research (CODALoop). In this context he as published more than 50 peer-reviewed conference papers and journal articles. Currently he is working on evaluation analytics and digital literacy in the projects PROVENANCE and VISDAT. Further activities include writing of grant proposals, co-supervision of bachelor and master theses, organisation of scientific workshops, and review of papers and journal articles.

Research interests:

His research focus lies on the conceptual and technical development of computer environments and solutions for cognitive psychology concepts. In particular, this includes digital learning environments (modelling competence and knowledge structures, learning analytics, and open learner models), advanced learning concepts (digital literacy, personalisation, meta-cognition, and self-regulated learning), human computer interfaces (information visualisation, visual analytics), decision support (cognitive biases, decision support systems), and evaluation analytics (tools and concepts for supporting human-centered evaluation of computer applications).
